I always thought that I wanted to be like Olivia Pope.
“Dinner is popcorn. Lucky for you, I just opened a bottle of Bordeaux that will bring tears to your eyes,” – Olivia Pope of Scandal.
I still want to be like Olivia Pope, even though I tried this special diet for a week or so but found it gave me a wicked headache and self-approval for overindulging in my next meals. I love wine and I love popcorn — but maybe not together.
“I want a happy life, and I want to control my own fate,” – Alicia Florrick of The Good Wife says.
Thank you, Alicia Florrick — and your writers. Wine drinking is about being in control of our own fate, and that is the true definition of an empowered woman — whether she is fictional or real.
The wine I drink needs to be what I like without including the nightmare of trying to fit in with random intimidating point systems. I prefer to make my own mistakes even if I want to drink Champagne with beef bourguignon and no one else does.
Drew Barrymore says, “I’m sure wine snobs look at me and think, ‘How dare you?'”
I like to think out of the box, and so does Barrymore. My motto has always been about trying new things, and that includes wine. I am a big advocate of drinking the wine you like. If you don’t like red wine, then forget about Olivia Pope and Alicia Florrick’s fictional characters and pick wines you like. Sometimes I crave a crisp Chablis from Burgundy, even if it’s a snowy winter day and protocol calls for a red wine. I simply put on another sweater.
“I’m really big on day dates. If you go for a stroll, have a picnic or lunch with a glass of wine — it doesn’t get much better,” – Rachel Zane of Suits.
Me too. I am especially enamored with Rachel Zane’s — well, Meghan Markle’s — lifestyle website The TIG, named after the Italian wine Tignanello. Tignanello is an Italian break-the-rules-kind-of-wine made from an untraditional blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Zane really makes a statement with her intent to educate consumers about adventure and creativity when it comes to blending wine. The Italians are not following traditional French protocols with this wine, but then again, America would not have been discovered if exploration had followed traditional maps. Perhaps certain wines would not have been produced without risk.
“You are at the mercy of your crop, and I love that. Though, we are telling a story. Every bottle has a story, and when you sit down and drink it, you feel connected to that story.” – Kate Hudson about wine in her latest interview with Wine Enthusiast.
Yes! I need to swallow this quote from Hudson. I call it Behind the Bottle, and I have not only written about the story of winegrowing but I have talked about it, cried about it and perhaps even bored my audience to tears about it. As long as I live, I will never fall short of words and stories surrounding the mystery of how that crazy weed can produce such a compelling piece of fruit that later becomes the juice of my escapades, memories and sheer beauty that not even the finest words can truly pinpoint. It’s a new story with every glass of wine.
Is it wine o’clock yet? Because I am ready to embark on another new adventure — and story.
