As if these dinner rolls weren’t fabulous enough on their own, I’ve gone ahead and turned them into rolls that resemble a favorite morning bagel. The added garlic, sesame seeds, poppy seeds and touch of salt will take these rolls over the top.
Nothing completes a meal like a freshly baked dinner roll. These rolls are big on flavor with a seedy and slightly salty topping, and they’re soft on the inside.
And since these rolls are pretty much fuss-free, you won’t mind taking requests to make them. I love how the tops are a little crunchy and flavorful thanks to a great mix of seasonings and seeds. I added ground flaxseed to the dough mix too for a touch of added fiber (and dose of antioxidants).

Yields 12
Prep time: 10 minutes | Inactive time: 40 minutes | Bake time: 15 minutes | Total time: 1 hour 5 minutes
Ingredients:
- 1 (1/4 ounce) package active dry yeast
- 1 cup lukewarm water
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/4 cup melted butter plus 2 tablespoons softened butter (reserved for topping)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed
- 1-1/2 cups all-purpose baking flour
- 1-1/2 cups whole-wheat flour
- 1/4 tablespoon dried minced garlic
- 1/4 tablespoon dried minced onion
- 1/4 tablespoon sesame seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon black sesame seeds
- 1/4 tablespoon poppy seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
- Nonstick cooking spray
Directions:
- To a large bowl, add the water, and then sprinkle the yeast on top. Let it sit until it dissolves.
- Add the egg, honey and melted butter to the yeast mixture, and whisk to combine.
- Add the salt and flaxseed to the mixture, along with the all-purpose flour. Stir until the flour is combined. Continue by adding the remaining whole-wheat flour. Mix until all the flour is incorporated.
- Use your hands to gather the dough together to form a ball.
- Cover the bowl with a clean dish towel, and allow the dough to sit for about 40 minutes. The dough should increase in size slightly.
- Heat the oven to 400 degrees F. Lightly spray a 9-inch baking dish with the nonstick cooking spray.
- Pinch off a piece of dough about 3-1/3 to 4 inches in diameter, and lightly shape it into a ball. Continue to do this until the dough is gone. Place the dough balls snugly into the baking dish.
- To a small bowl, add the garlic, onion, sesame seeds, poppy seeds and sea salt, and mix to combine.
- Brush the tops of each ball with the softened butter. Sprinkle the seed mixture over each ball of dough.
- Bake for about 15 minutes. Remove from the oven, and allow to cool slightly before serving.
