Patterned roll cakes are showing up all over Pinterest and other social media sites. They are relatively simple to make: You just need to add a design with the cake batter and then freeze it. Pour on the rest of the batter, then bake, fill and roll the cake up.
This version adds a Yoda head in a repeating patter. The result is a fun and unique Star Wars cake. Add a candy Star Wars logo, and you will be ready for the upcoming The Force Awakens movie.
Did you get your movie tickets yet? Either way, celebrate with this super-fun roll cake.
Star Wars Yoda roll cake recipe
You can use your favorite filling in place of canned frosting. Be sure to roll the cake while it’s still warm to avoid cracking.
Yields 1 (8-10 slices)
Prep time: 1 hour 15 minutes | Bake time: 15 minutes | Total time: 1 hour 30 minutes
Ingredients:
For the cake
- 1 box cake mix (I used white cake mix)
- 6 eggs
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup water
- Blue food gel
- Light green food gel
- 1 quart-size plastic freezer bag
- 1 can prepared frosting (I used lemon flavor)
- Yoda pattern (get printable here)
For the Star Wars logo
- 1/4 cup each black and yellow melting candy wafers
- Star Wars logo pattern (get printable here)
Directions:
- Heat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- To a bowl, add the cake mix, eggs, oil and water, and beat on high until the batter is uniform.
- To a small bowl, add 2 cups of the batter, and tint it light green (3 to 4 drops of gel).
- Print out the Yoda design on 2 (8 x 10-inch) sheets of paper, and place them onto a jelly roll baking pan. Place parchment paper on top of the design.
- Add green batter to a pastry bag or quart-size ziplock bag, snip off a corner and, following the template, trace the design onto the parchment paper. The design you will see on top of the roll cake will be about 3/4 down the parchment paper. Once the baking sheet is filled, freeze it for at least 20 minutes.
- Meanwhile, tint the rest of the batter blue (8 to 10 drops of gel).
- Remove the baking sheet from the freezer, and spread the blue batter on top of the Yoda design.
- Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- While the cake is still warm, place a clean dish towel over it, then add an upside-down jelly roll pan over the dish towel. Flip over, and remove the pan that the cake baked in. Peel off the parchment paper.
- Place another towel over the cake, and flip it over again. Remove the other pan and towel. Your cake should now be design side down on a towel. Use the towel to roll up the cake. Let cool for 30 minutes.
- Unroll, and spread buttercream over the cake. Roll up again. Move the cake to a plate or platter, and trim the ends with serrated knife.
- To make the logo (optional): Melt black and yellow candy in separate plastic freezer bags. Microwave in 20-second intervals until just melted. Snip off a corner of the bag, and trace the logo with the black candy (outline the letters) on parchment paper. Let harden 10 minutes. Fill in the rest of the logo with yellow candy. Let harden 20 minutes. Remove the entire logo, and place it on the cake.
