Another day, another food recall. On the heels of the nationwide celery recall due to E.coli contamination, a recent salmonella outbreak has prompted a full line of nut butters to be recalled.
JEM Raw Chocolate, LLC. has announced a voluntary recall of its full line of nut butters due to potential salmonella contamination. This move comes after investigators with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention linked the product to individuals sickened in a salmonella outbreak.

Eleven salmonella illnesses have been confirmed in nine states: California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, North Carolina, New Jersey and Oregon. Laura Burnworth, a CDC health communication specialist, says that investigators contacted eight of the individuals sickened and found that six had exposure to the JEM Raw brand.
Jen Moore, co-founder and CEO of JEM Raw Chocolates, LLC., says that none of the product samples have tested positive for salmonella but that the company is issuing the voluntary recall on all products and sizes, packaged in glass jars and sold under brand name JEM Raw Organics, out of an abundance of caution. The recall affects products distributed nationwide in retail stores and through mail order between June 2015 and November 2015.
According to the FDA press release, Moore said, “We are taking these steps because consumer safety is our top priority. As a health food company, our customer’s health is our number one priority. Although no JEM Raw products have tested positive for salmonella, we feel strongly that issuing a voluntary recall is the right thing to do. JEM is working closely with the FDA, ODA, and OHA to determine the root cause of the outbreak.”

JEM Raw is working directly with consumers to manage the replacement of the recalled products and advises that the product should be thrown away instead of returning it to the store.
