Because who wants to eat a soup and sandwich when you can sink your teeth into Black Forest gâteau or a combination of rhubarb and custard and Jaffa Cakes? The good news is that there’s not long to wait before The Café at Café Royal opens on March 3 — just be sure to go wearing your stretchiest clothes.
The concept is a one-of-a-kind for London, and the menus have been put together by executive pastry chef Sarah Barber, who has worked at the Corinthia Hotel and was head pastry chef at Yauatcha and Dinner by Heston Blumenthal.

Also notable is the fact that Barber will be the first female pastry chef in the hotel’s 151-year history, which is really rather a testament to her amazing skill, Evening Standard reports.

“The artistry of desserts always appealed to me more, and that’s why I pursued it as my career”, she said. “Desserts have been big news and have got huge in the past five years. There is a massive gap in the market here in London for any decent places to get dessert. In many top restaurants, dessert is an afterthought — it is never the reason that you go there. Here, cake is at the forefront, and all of the dishes are light, so you can eat more of them.”

The Café will offer three dessert tasting menus from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. There will also be a five-course Sarah In Wonderland menu (featuring creations like the Queen of Hearts, with raspberries, Champagne and roses), which has been inspired by Alice In Wonderland and will cost £42 per person, with matching wines for £20.

Or for something a little more affordable, there’s a three-course Childhood Memories menu for £26, which will include the pastry chef’s take on favourites like rhubarb and custard and Jaffa Cakes.

“For most people, they are happiest when they are reliving childhood memories, so I have used that as an inspiration,” Barber said of her inspiration.
