SheKnows Editorial

At SheKnows Food, we spend a lot of time reading about — you guessed it — food (and drinks too!). And we’ve come across some stories that are too good to not share. Here are the food items from the week that you don’t want to miss.

1. In-N-Out’s switch to antibiotic-free beef is one more excuse to get a Double-Double for dinner

Finally, a reason to feel good about eating fast food for dinner. In-N-Out has announced it is switching to antibiotic-free beef, meaning that with every burger you buy, you’re technically sending a message that you support responsible ingredient sourcing. So, you know, forget about making that salad for dinner, and grab an animal-style burger for dinner instead. It’s for the environment. — Delish

2. Whole Foods 365 and TJ store brands cost nearly the same except when it comes to organic

Can’t decide whether to shop at Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods? This might help you decide. It turns out that when buying each company’s store brands, the pricing is nearly identical… if you’re buying organic. Whole Foods’ 365 Everyday Value brand is pretty much all organic, while Trader Joe’s house brand has both organic and conventional items. Trader Joe’s organic and Whole Foods’ organic store brand items pretty much match up, but if you’re looking for absolute cheapest, Trader Joe’s nonorganic is your best bet. This is especially true when it comes to meat and cheese. But if you’re looking for ice cream, bagged lettuce and frozen veggies, take heart — the two chains’ prices are basically the same. — Business Insider

3. McDonald’s virtual reality goggles

McDonald’s Happy Meals are getting a futuristic makeover in Sweden. From March 5 – 12, kids can shell out around $4.10 to get their hands on “Happy Goggles,” a special Happy Meal box that turns into a virtual reality headset. Fold the box in the right way, place your phone inside and voilà — you’ll be playing a virtual reality skiing game called Slope Stars. Sounds a lot cooler than the plastic junk I got in my Happy Meals as a kid, but then again, my parents didn’t have to buy me a $400 phone for my Happy Meal toys to work either. — Foodbeast

4. Chick-fil-A bribes diners into giving up cellphones for dinner

Chick-fil-A has rolled out a new promotion in which families can win a free Icedream cone if they refrain from using their phones while they eat. Simply put your phone in the cardboard “chicken coop” on your table while you eat, then let your cashier know if you were able to complete the challenge to get your free ice cream. The company says the challenge is meant to promote family bonding and conversation, but I’m guessing that more than a few people will take advantage of this honor system-based challenge to get their hands on a free ice cream cone after dinner. — Foodbeast
