Starbucks has really been upping its game lately, with a whole slew of fun, new rainbow beverages, granitas and summer Frappuccinos that I get thirsty just thinking about. But my little habit is about to get a lot more expensive, as Starbucks has announced that it is raising the prices of some of its drinks by as much as 30 cents each on July 12.

For the past few years, Starbucks has raised its menu prices in early July. This year, it accidentally started charging the higher prices early, after preemptively updating its point-of-sale systems. Expensive coffee is not the wake-up call we want or need, but some people were overcharged by as much as 30 cents. Starbucks then revealed that, though early, the price increase was in fact real. (Those who think they were overcharged can call Starbucks customer service at 1-800-782-7282.)

We don’t know for sure which beverages are getting a price increase. In past years, plain coffee has gotten more expensive — last year a venti-size coffee went from $2.35 to $2.45 on average (prices vary based on location).
Suppose you buy a venti every weekday, and suppose that venti goes up 30 cents to $2.75 — you’re going to wind up shelling out a grand total of $715 on takeout coffee next year.
I just hope specialty beverages don’t get too much more expensive. Many Frappuccinos and lattes are already around $5, and though my love for Starbucks runs deep, at a certain point you’ve got to draw the line.
