I’m usually pretty excited by fast foods’ bizarre mashups, but Burger King’s latest, I’m not quite sold on.
It’s the Whopperito, a burrito-burger fusion that, after being tested in select markets in June, is going to be released nationally on Aug. 15.
According to Burger King, the Whopperito is a combo of Tex-Mex and American cuisine, basically ground beef, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and queso sauce. But instead of feeling excited to try it, I’m kind of unimpressed. Then again, they’ve thoroughly tested the Whopperito in several markets and it passed muster, so it must have something going for it. And TBH, if I had to choose between a regular Whopper and a Whopperito, I’d choose the Whopperito any day.
So, when it comes down to it, I’ll probably let my self-loathing and curiosity get the better of me and try one of these bad boys come Aug. 15. But don’t judge me if you see me shoving some crushed-up Doritos Locos taco shells into the tortilla before I take my first bite.
