The foods we’ll all be obsessed with in 2017 according to Pinterest

Been eating a lot of Buddha bowls lately? Suddenly curious about sous vide cooking? Seeing grilled octopus everywhere? There could be a reason for that. These are some of the foods and cooking methods getting pinned the most out of literally billions of food pins. Here’s what Pinterest thinks will be the top food trends for 2017.

Fruit as a meat substitute

Fruit-based meat substitute up 420 percent

We are all over this trend at SheKnows. We shared with you 21 recipes that prove jackfruit is the best new vegan ingredient and we showed you how to use jackfruit. It makes an especially convincing fried “chicken.” But jackfruit isn’t the only fruity vegan swap. We also told you about coconut bacon.

Sous vide

Sous vide up 191 percent

This is the sophisticated slow cooker. This cooking method has you place your ingredients (usually meat) with flavorings inside a plastic bag and place that inside a warm water bath for tender, flavorful results. A machine can run you $150 to $200, but we showed you a simple hack for sous vide cooking without the machine.

Snacks with benefits

Healthy snacks up 200 percent

We’re asking our snacks to do way more than satisfy our momentary hunger. Now we’re looking for munchies with vitamins, protein, fiber… anything that’s actually good for us. Our pick for one of the best sources of healthy snack foods is the subscription box company Love With Food. We also shared a ton of energy bite recipes. Interested in zucchini chips? So are we. Stay tuned.

Buddha bowls

Buddha bowls up 200 percent

2016 was The Year of the Bowl and 2017 is just going to get more bowlicious. Yes, that’s the worst portmanteau you’ve ever read. I’m sorry. But I’m not sorry bowls are a thing because we love them too. We’re big fans of Lukas Volger’s cookbook, Bowl, and we shared lunch bowl recipes and smoothie bowls recipes with you this year. We’re just getting started with this bowl business.

Octopus

Octopus recipes up 30 percent

People are eating more octopus. Oh my God, why? Why this trend? The octopus is one of the most intelligent animals on earth. It’s the one animal (of the animals considered culinary in the Western world) that I refuse to eat. I can’t, you guys. I can’t go with you there. Calamari?

Fruited sour beer

Sour beer up 43 percent

If you’ve been ignoring the craft beer trend because bitter isn’t your thing, there’s one ale that might tempt you: fruited sour beer. That’s beer brewed with fruit, and it just might lure you away from your rosé this summer. If so, check out our own guide to homebrewing.

Empanadas

Empanada recipes up 40 percent

These Latin-American hand pies can be stuffed with just about anything, including lentils and chicken potpie ingredients. Use refrigerated pie crust dough if you’re not into making your own dough. And check out the cool Día de los Muertos empanadas we found.

Naan pizza

Naan pizza up 175 percent

Apparently, everyone has caught onto this pizza hack. Forget the pizza dough. Just pick up some of the Indian flatbread and add your usual toppings. Remember when we used to do this with pita bread?

Sauerkraut

Sauerkraut recipes up 43 percent

Fermented foods have been trending for a while — just ask our friend kombucha. Sauerkraut is usually made with cabbage and can be found on store shelves everywhere. But it’s not that hard to make your own, and cabbage is far from the only food you can ferment. Check out all these other fruits and veggies that can give you a probiotic boost.

Grapeseed oil

Grapeseed oil up 25 percent

Just when you thought it was all about coconut oil, here comes grapeseed oil. It has a higher smoke point than olive oil, it has lots of vitamin E, and it’s typically less expensive than olive or coconut oil. Go easy, though. Grapeseed oil has a higher ratio of polyunsaturated fats like omega 6 and 9 than the omega 3s we really need.
