Kinder Eggs are one of those food items like raw French cheese and Beluga caviar that seem all the more exciting because they’re banned in the U.S. The Kinder Surprise Egg has been banned since its inception because of an old FDA rule that states that food items can’t contain a “non-nutritive object,” in this case, the small toy enclosed in each chocolate Kinder Egg. But all that is about to change, and even though I’m a grown-up, I can’t wait to get my hands on one.
Ferrero International, the Kinder parent company, is bringing a product called the Kinder Joy to the U.S. It’s made up of two halves: One side contains a small toy, while the other side is filled with chocolate and milk créme that’s topped with crispy wafer bites that you eat with a spoon. That way, the non-food item never comes into contact with the sweet chocolate confection. Brilliant hack, chocolate masterminds!

It’s not identical to the same Kinder Surprise that’s sold in Europe (which doesn’t have that chocolate wall dividing the inside in two) but it’ll do the trick for me! After all, from cereal boxes to Happy Meals, there’s nothing that beats getting a toy with your food — even if you’re a grown-ass adult. And honestly? Chocolate créme you eat with a spoon sounds even better to me than a hollow milk chocolate egg.
The Kinder Joy should be available in the U.S. starting in 2018. In the meantime, the Easter candy I hoarded from my niece will have to satisfy my egg-inspired chocolate cravings.
