Sweet, tart and chewy, Skittles and Starburst have always been a couple of my favorite classic candies. Yesterday while vacuuming, I found a still-wrapped yellow Starburst under the couch, and even though I haven’t bought Starburst in months and had no idea where it came from… I ate it. Yes, that’s how susceptible I am to their lure, and no amount of cat hair and dust was going to stop me from popping that hidden gem in my mouth.
So, I’m basically going berserk after hearing that Starburst and Skittles both have new Sweet Heat flavors coming out. We’ve seen mainstream spicy candy in the U.S. before, but usually the heat they’re packing comes from cinnamon, which, let’s be honest, is kinda meh. These new candies combine tropical fruit flavors and chili, seemingly getting inspiration from Mexican candies like Pulparindo (a totally addictive tamarind leather that’s somehow simultaneously spicy, salty, sweet and sour).

And the manufacturers of Skittles and Starburst aren’t just adding spice to the original flavors — they’re actually introducing new ones. Sweet Heat Skittles will feature Fiery Watermelon, Blazin’ Mango, Flamin’ Orange, Sizzlin’ Strawberry and Lemon Spark. Starburst will introduce Fiery Watermelon, Strawberry Mango, Flamin’ Orange and Pipin’ Pineapple.
I can say with confidence that the Strawberry Mango sweet heat Starburst is probably going to be the best thing to happen to American candy in generations, and the best part is, they won’t even cost you that much to try. Each pack will be sold for about 99 cents, while the big bags for sharing will retail for around $3.19.
So start saving your allowance, kids, because when these babies are released in December, I have a feeling you’ll want to stock up.
