Listeria Alert: Check Your Cupboards for These Recalled Nuts

SheKnows Editorial

I always have a bag or two of nuts on hand for a quick snack between meals or to throw into salads. But every now and then, it seems like nuts are cursed with a string of recalls, and this year is no exception.

Simple Truth Dry Roasted Macadamia Nuts and Ava’s Brand Organic Cashews Roasted & Salted are both being recalled due to a possible (unrelated) listeria contamination.

The Simple Truth macadamia nuts were sold at Kroger, Baker’s, Gerbes and Dillons stores in several states: Ohio, Kentucky, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and Indiana. The nuts are sold in a “12 ounce, clear plastic package marked with an expiration date of May 02, 2018 stamped on the side,” according to the FDA.

If you bought the recalled macadamia nuts, you should return them to the store where they were purchased for a refund or replacement or you can contact Kroger at 1-800-KROGERS.

The Ava’s cashews recall is much smaller. Hampton Farms, the maker of the Ava’s brand nuts, noted that they only sold 225 units of the potentially contaminated nuts. Apparently, the nuts themselves tested negative for listeria, but some of the equipment that was used during production was contaminated.

The recalled cashews are sold in an 8-ounce tub and have the UPC 8-10111-01035-1, best-by date of April 28, 2018, and are marked with lot No. 11817-L2. You should return the recalled product to the place of purchase for a full refund or call Hampton Farms at 413-732-4193, ext. 0.

Damn — it really seems that nothing is safe from recalling anymore, no matter how healthy. In the meantime, if you’re searching for a listeria-free snack, why not try one of these low-carb recipes?
