Hold onto your hats, Rick and Morty fans, because McDonald’s is bringing back Szechuan sauce for a limited time on Feb. 26. You may recall the fiasco that ensued last time the chain rereleased the beloved sauce, a 1990s tie-in with the animated movie Mulan. Now that’s what I call ’90s!
The sauce had been featured in an episode of Rick and Morty, when one of the characters went on a quest through time to attempt to taste it just one more time. So fans of the show took to the streets when the fast-food chain announced its limited rerelease of the sauce, anxious to taste this forbidden ambrosia of McDonald’s past. But they were soon to be disappointed.

There were lines of hundreds of people winding around the block at locations that had the sauce, and McDonald’s soon ran out, leaving thousands of Rick and Morty fans enraged. Some locations never even received their promised shipments, and in at least one case, diners from Canada drove hours only to find upon arrival in the States that the location they had their hearts set on never had the Szechuan sauce at all.
In some cases, the police were even called to control the crowds, which were destroying parking lots of local McDonald’s restaurants and causing trouble. Basically, it was mass hysteria on a scale the chain did not anticipate, so this time around, they’re doing things a little differently.
For starters, Szechuan sauce will be available at every McDonald’s in the nation on Feb. 26, so you don’t have to worry about traveling too far to get your hands on some. They are also releasing 20 million of the sauce packets this time around, which will be sold until they run out. It could still go faster than anticipated depending on how thirsty Rick and Morty fans are to get a taste, but at least everyone has a fighting chance. I’m not even in it for the fandom. I just think it would be exciting to have another sauce option with my McNuggets. You can only rely on the powers of sweet and sour for so many years (like, 20 at this point if my calculations are correct) because it starts to lose some of its charm.

If Feb. 26 still feels impossibly far away, McDonald’s is also releasing a three-episode podcast you can listen to about their sauce woes last autumn (if you’re really hard up for entertainment, I guess).

So, get ready for Feb. 26, because it’s a date that’s sure to live on in our hearts, minds and stomachs… for longer than we might expect based on my past experience with McDonald’s food and my digestive system.
