I Tried the Viral Peanut Butter & Pickle Sandwich Everyone Is Talking About

There are very few things I would not put peanut butter on. I’ve even been known to slather it on hamburgers and bacon from time to time, and I even put it in soups, but when The New York Times tweeted a recipe for a peanut butter and pickle sandwich, I thought, “OK, that’s where I draw the line.”

While the tweet had some people gagging, a surprisingly high number of people said not only is this delicious, but they have been eating it for years.

If so many people love this, it can’t be that bad, right? I do love pickles, and I do love peanut butter, so maybe a peanut butter and pickle sandwich is the creamy, salty goodness I never knew I needed. Well, there’s only one way to find out. So today for lunch, I am making a peanut butter and pickle sandwich.

The ingredients are simple.

  • Bread
  • Peanut Butter
  • Bread & butter pickles

Unfortunately for me, I only had dill pickles on hand.

I spread a thick layer of peanut butter on one side, piled on some pickles and voila! Peanut butter and pickle sandwich. I will say, this is probably the quickest lunch I have ever made.

Now, for the question you’ve all been waiting for: How did it taste?

It wasn’t as terrible as I had imagined. The extra crunch from the crispy pickles added some nice texture to an otherwise mushy sandwich. The saltiness of the pickles and the rich, creaminess of the peanut butter paired nicely, but it was just a little lackluster. Maybe I was expecting too much from a sandwich. After all, it did have some pretty high expectations to live up to. Or maybe having bread and butter pickles really makes the difference. I don’t know, and I probably will never know because I have no plans to make this again, but hey, if you’re craving an extra-salty sandwich with a creamy filling, then maybe this is for you.
