Remember back in January when Krispy Kreme held its first-ever crowdsourced contest asking us all to vote for one of four new doughnut glazes using the hashtag #VoteForGlaze? The options were blueberry, caramel, maple or lemon; and the contest was a huge success, attracting nearly 2 million votes. The winner? The lemon-glazed doughnut — and after months of waiting, we’ll finally get to taste it.
For only one week this month — from Monday, April 23 through Sunday, April 29 — the new doughnut will debut at participating Krispy Kreme locations across the U.S. and Canada.

“The bar doesn’t get any higher than our Original Glazed Doughnut!” said Jackie Woodward, chief marketing officer of Krispy Kreme, in a press release. “Experimenting with the many flavor profiles lemon presents to create an all-new lemon glaze was a fun, but serious culinary challenge. There has been so much anticipation and zest for the new Lemon Glaze Doughnut, we can’t wait to share the joy with our fans!”
You might be wondering — like we were — why we had to wait so long for the new glaze to debut, but there’s a perfectly reasonable explanation for it. According to Krispy Kreme’s release, their culinary team spent months perfecting the new glaze, “which balances the freshness of real lemon, the brightness of citrus and the sweetness of Krispy Kreme’s iconic Original Glazed Doughnut.”

This isn’t the first time Krispy Kreme has experimented with bold new flavors. Back in August 2017, Krispy Kreme teamed up with Reese’s for the Reese’s peanut butter-filled doughnut: a fluffy, raised doughnut stuffed with light Reese’s peanut butter cream and topped with a chocolate glaze and a sprinkle of Reese’s Mini peanut butter chips and peanuts.
A little further back in April 2017, Krispy Kreme partnered up with Ghirardelli to launch two new doughnut flavors: mint chocolate and sea salt-caramel.
With such decadent doughnuts as of late, these zesty new lemon-glazed doughnuts should help balance out their already sweet menu — and we can’t wait to get our hands on one next week.
