The Pioneer Woman Is Making a Big Change to Her Thanksgiving Menu With This Side Dish Swap

Every family has their own unique traditions and recipes they pass down over the holidays. One hotly contested dish? Sweet potatoes! Prepared as pie, topped with marshmallows, served as fries — there are so many ways to serve this seasonal vegetable. But if you want to switch things up this year (and aren’t worried about the ensuing chaos from tradition-loving family members), then Ree Drummond has a unique twist for you. The Pioneer Woman shared the interesting way she’s incorporating sweet potatoes in her Thanksgiving menu this year, and you’ll wonder why you never thought of it sooner.

In a new video posted to Food Network’s YouTube Channel, Drummond shares that for the first time, she is making sweet potato rolls for Thanksgiving! Two of our favorite side dishes combined into fluffy rolls? Sounds amazing!

She starts by adding whole milk, lemon juice, honey, and other ingredients to an electric mixer set to low. Once those are combined, she scoops sweet potatoes into the bowl. (She uses a frozen bag of sweet potatoes that were steamed in the microwave first, because why add extra steps to your already busy holiday menu?) From there, she switches the whisk to the dough hook on her electric mixer, adding bread flour to the bowl.

Drummond lets the mixer knead the dough, then adds it to a covered bowl to let it rise. When it’s ready, Drummond rolls 48 little balls of dough and adds two to each muffin tin. She sprinkles them with more seasoning, then bakes them. The finished rolls are “golden, delicious, and perfect for the feast,” according to Drummond. We can practically smell the rich, flavorful rolls from our computer screens!

To serve, Drummond recommends gently pulling the rolls in half and spreading with melted butter. While rolls could be a basic dish designed to soak up the gravy and serve as a palette cleanser during Thanksgiving, Drummond predicts these will be the “star” of your dinner this year.

“These sound amazing 🎉❤,” one person commented on the video. Another wrote, “Thank you So much for sharing this recipe. I’m sure my family will love this. I am definitely going to try this recipe 😋👍☺️🫶”
