If you aren’t someone with a signature side dish, the whole concept of potlucks might stress you out (hi, I’m right there with you!). Figuring out what to make and bring, how many people it will feed, if it’ll appeal to a wide arrange of palates, if it’ll fit with the majority of the dishes in general — it’s stressful! I may be (definitely) overthinking this, which is why I tend to volunteer for drinks and ice most of the time. That’s why I’m so happy to see TikTokers bucking this trend and coming up with their own twist on potlucks: soup night!
Unlike traditional potlucks where everyone tries to bring different things — there are often spreadsheets involved! — at soup night, everyone is supposed to bring the same type of dish. First pressure instantly removed! All the guests bring their own favorite soup recipes for guests to try, and it’s the perfect winter dinner party idea.
TikToker Rob Shepherd (@robshep) shared a video of his recent soup night. “Christmas party soup night. This was glorious!!!” he captioned the post, which has 2.8 million views. In the video, he explained, “It’s like a traditional potluck, but instead of bringing random foods, everyone a soup. The fun part is, everyone brought their own muffin pan, then we put cups in the muffin pan and filled them with all the soups.”
Um, can you say brilliant?! Not having to wash out the bowl six times to try different soups, but just having them all there to try at your leisure sounds great. Then throwing away the disposable cups for easy cleanup at the end? Yep, this is definitely one of our favorite 2024 food trends.
There were also crackers and breads to dip in the soup, completing the delightful dinner. As if the views weren’t enough indication of how much people love this idea, the comments reinforced it. “An annual Soup Scoop!!!! I would love this!!!” one person said.
“love love love soup! what a great idea!!!” another person commented. Someone else wrote, “cheap, easy, and a fun way to get the fam together, I’m so down.”
And the most brilliant idea yet: “We are doing this the week before superbowl and calling it a SOUPER BOWL party.”
We can’t wait to try this at our next friends and family get-together. And if you need any ideas for delicious soup recipes, check out some of our favorites HERE.
