Anna Wintouris the fashion industry. When we aren’t talking about the latest styles the Vogue editor-in-chief is launching, we’re gossiping about who is (and isn’t!) invited to her famous Met Gala. She is an icon — so is it really any surprise that her go-to lunch order is iconic, too? Famous New York City restauranter Geoffrey Zakarian just dished on the fashion legend’s favorite meal, which is ultra indulgent and made-to-order every day.
In an interview on Katie Lee Biegel’s podcast All on the Table this week, Zakarian revealed that his restaurant knew Wintour’s order because “she ate the same thing every day.” Gotta love a consistent queen!
It started with a very rare hamburger (which wasn’t on the menu, BTW!) that was “ground fresh every day for her.” He added, “She wanted it saignant, like bloody-a** rare. Almost raw; heavily salted.”
As a side, Wintour would order “a pot of mashed potato[s].” This extra-special dish was made Joel Robuchon-style after the famous French chef, with “60 percent butter and 40 percent potato.” No wonder this was her go-to order!
But before you go testing out Wintour’s go-to lunch order yourself, keep in mind that per the USDA, ground beef needs to be heated to 160 degrees Fahrenheit to be considered safe. Do with that information what you will.
Timing was everything when it came to preparing Wintour’s meal. “You gotta make [the mashed potatoes] to order, so you have to keep the potatoes warm, and then mill them, and then throw all the butter in when she sat down,” Zakarian continued.
During the interview, Zakarian explained that Wintour’s assistant would call the restaurant when Wintour was on the way so they could be ready to start cooking to fit her time expectations. “First thing she wanted when she sat down was a cappuccino…halfway through her coffee, she wanted her burger,” Zakarian said. Servers would update Zakarian so he could fire up the mashed potatoes and prepare the meat at the exact right time.
“She would obliterate the entire thing in less than 15 minutes,” he added.
In 2022, journalist Amy Odell wrote a biography about the Condé Nast executive. She revealed that another one of Wintour’s go-to lunches was “a steak and Caprese salad without the tomatoes from the nearby Palm restaurant,” per Business Insider. Odell told the outlet, “Anna is known to enjoy rare red meat and the best of everything in general.”
Rare red meat may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but we wouldn’t expect anything less bold from such an iconic woman.
