Sunny Anderson Makes Boxed Brownie Mix Taste So Much Better With This Surprise Ingredient

A box of brownie mix can save you when you need something sweet in a pinch. But if you have a bit more time on your hands, you can turn a basic boxed brownie mix into something gourmet. Sunny Anderson loves dressing up a box of brownie mix with an unexpected ingredient that makes your brownies extra moist, tangy, and so much tastier than the original mix — and you may already have some of this ingredient left over from taco night.

“This is really simple,” Anderson said of her brownie recipe on a segment from The Kitchen posted to the Food Network Instagram, adding “This is like a pantry and refrigerator pull.” All you need to make these basic brownies pop is a little bit of brown sugar and some sour cream (yes, really!).

After preparing her brownie mix according to the package instructions, Anderson pours the batter into a baking dish and sets it aside while she prepares a delicious swirl made with cinnamon sugar, light brown sugar, vanilla extract, and sour cream. Not only will the sour cream add a nice tangy bite to the brownies, but it will make them a bit more moist, too.

The swirl ingredients are mixed in a small bowl, and Anderson likes to spoon small dollops of the mix onto the brownie batter. Then, with a skewer or chopstick, randomly swirl the sour cream mixture through the batter, creating a marbled effect.

Finally, you can bake the brownies according to the instructions on the package, allow them to cool, and cut them however you like to enjoy them. Once you try your favorite boxed brownies with a sour cream swirl, there’s no going back! Grab Anderson’s full recipe here and give them a go — they’re bound to become your new favorite go-to dessert.
