There’s a chill in the air, and we all know that the chill is about to snap into the true cold of winter, especially now that we’ve turned our clocks back. And while sipping hot coffee in the morning always helps get us going, what about those days when we’re trying to avoid caffeine? Martha Stewart has a solution. She recently shared a recipe on Instagram for her spiced chai apple cider, which features the warming spices of masala chai, paired with the sweet and tangy flavor of apple cider.

On Oct 6, Stewart shared a video, saying, “For a warm, cozy drink that combines the sweetness of mulled apple cider with the bold flavors of masala chai tea, try our chai cider. It takes just a few minutes to make, but you’ll need to let the flavors infuse for an hour before drinking—or better yet, let it chill overnight and reheat the next day. Get the recipe at the link in our bio.”

Stewart’s cider recipe relies on fresh spices and ginger to give it that warm and cozy flavor. She infuses her apple cider with crushed cardamom pods (we love the cardamom from Burlap & Barrel), cinnamon sticks, black peppercorns, whole cloves, and slices of fresh ginger. It’s a robust seasoning blend with just enough of a kick to put some pep in your step.

Making the recipe is actually really easy. All you need to do is mix the spices with the cider, then let everything simmer together for about 10 minutes. Stewart says that you should let the cider sit for at least an hour, so the spices have time to infuse it with flavor. But you can also let it sit overnight in the refrigerator if you want it to be even more robust.

Strain before serving, and make sure it’s nice and hot. It’s a warm fall drink you maybe haven’t tried yet, and whether you’re looking for a new spin on cider or a caffeine-free masala chai alternative, this spiced cider recipe could be what you need to get you out of your cozy bed on chilly mornings. It’s also a nice nighttime sipper to help soothe you before going to bed, and we have a feeling it could be pretty good with a shot of whiskey added, too.
