This recipe is for the people who could eat Nutella on bread for every meal for the rest of their lives. It’s Joanna Gaines‘ Chocolate Hazelnut Bread Pudding and, for better or worse, it’s one of the easiest desserts you can make — and most of the ingredients are already in your pantry.
“It’s all rich, delicious dessert: chocolate hazelnut bread pudding,” Gaines said in the below video posted to the Food Network Instagram account. The recipe starts with crunch in the form of homemade candied hazelnuts, which are toasted in a skillet filled with melted butter and brown sugar, and then allowed to cool and crisp up. These will last up to four days in an airtight container, so make them ahead of time to cut down on the recipe time.
The most crucial ingredient in bread pudding is, well, the bread. Gaines used French bread, but you can choose whichever loaf looks best to you. (Brioche would be a delicious substitute.) “You can change up the bread, you can change up the ingredients,” Gaines said about the forgiving recipe. “You can add fruit, you can add nuts.”
After the bread is cubed and placed in your baking dish, it’s time to make the custard. Whisk together eggs, yolks, half-and-half, cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, melted butter, and melted chocolate. You could even substitute hazelnut spread in for that melted chocolate if you’re feeling extra hazelnutty.
Pour this custard over the bread and allow everything to mix, mingle, and soak for about 30 minutes. Finally, bake for about 45 minutes, and after allowing to cool for a bit, you’re ready to dive in. Don’t forget to top your serving with those candied hazelnuts and a bit of whipped cream!
