Fast food calories and fat – It’s enough to keep you home!

Sometimes when you or someone else in the family is busy with other activities, it’s tempting to stop for fast food for lunch or dinner rather than come home and cook.

While we don’t do this often, I have learned to either look for the healthiest fast foods, such as salads or a plan baked potato, or pick up a Happy Meal for my son and eat something healthier when I get home. Now, I don’t begrudge any family their fast food if it makes life easier. I think we all hear the warnings about everything in moderation. I did have a chance, however, to look up some popular fast foods, and was astounded by the amount of fat and calories included in a single food. Check out some of the counts for foods found at McDonalds:

Big Mac:

  • Fat: 33 grams
  • Calories: 600
  • Calories from fat: 300
  • Carbs: 50

Filet O Fish

  • Fat: 20 grams
  • Calories: 410
  • Calories from fat: 180
  • Carbs: 41

Hamburger

  • Fat:36
  • Calories:585
  • Carbs:30

Medium French Fries

  • Fat:19
  • Calories:400
  • Carbs:55

If you’ll be eating at a fast food restaurant and you’re watching your weight, opt for salads without meat, fruit, or a baked potato with little or no topping. Be mindful of fat- and calorie- laden sauces and dressings too. Fast foods taste great and they’re convenient for sure, but the truth is, they’re not very good for us. Be mindful of what you’re putting in your body, an eat these types of foods in moderation.
