What better way to spend quality time with the kiddos than teaching them a few things in the kitchen? We all know kids love to play with their food. Here’s how to put that enthusiasm to good use.
Homemade Breakfast Donuts
Open two cans of Pillsbury rolls (the kind available from the refrigerator section of grocery store). Use a melon baller to scoop out the center of each roll to create your donut hole.
Drop the rolls into about 1-1/2 inches of hot sunflower oil (in an electric skillet, fryer or stove top skillet) to cover at least half of the roll. When the bottoms brown, carefully flip them over to brown the other sides. Remove them from the oil and place them on paper towels to absorb excess grease.
The kids can help when it’s time for toppings. I like to place all the toppings in separate bowls and place them on the counter, giving the kids access to all the different options.
Fun toppings to try:
- Cinnamon and sugar mix
- Crystallized ginger
- Coconut
- Vanilla glaze (made of melted butter, confectioners’ sugar, a few drops of vanilla and a splash of milk)
- Sprinkles (to add after the glaze)
- Chocolate glaze (made by adding a tablespoon of ready-made chocolate frosting to the homemade glaze)
Pizza Bar
“Hi. My name is Chef Doug, and I am addicted to pizza.”
This is an oldie but a goodie: Set up a pizza bar on your kitchen table or counter. Gather lots of bowls (colorful ones are extra fun).
Ingredients:
Premade crusts from your local grocery store (wheat varieties are the healthiest)
1 large jar marinara
1 large jar alfredo sauce
3 to 4 selections of grated cheeses such as fontina, sharp cheddar and smoked mozzarella
Directions:
Get adventurous: There are no rules in cuisine! The ingredients above are just the beginning. Top pizzas with what you have in the fridge and supplement with items from the store, such as pineapple, canned mushrooms typically are more favored with kids than fresh, pepperoni, proscuitto, chopped chicken barbecue or regular ground beef (cooked), chopped hot dogs or bell peppers.
Nothing beats food that entertains and keeps the kids busy!
