New snack ideas for kids

Getting stuck in a snacktime rut is all too easy. Keep your kids coming back for more by trying out some of these new snack ideas. Your kids will love them because they’re fun and delicious, and you’ll love them because they’re easy to make and good for them.

Dessert nachos

Take a favorite salty snack and turn it sweet with this snack your kids are sure to love. Cut a tortilla into triangles, brush lightly with melted butter, and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Bake them for 10 minutes or until they’re golden brown and crispy. These sweet tortilla chips are good enough to eat alone, but they’re even better dipped in yogurt and served alongside fresh fruit.

Snack cones

This snack puts a new spin on an old favorite, making it both tasty and portable. Make a mixture of your kids’ favorite munchies – cereal, popcorn, nuts, dried fruit and anything else on which they like to snack. Fill an ice cream cone with the combined goodies, and they have a great, healthy snack they can carry around. They can even eat the cone when they’re done. To add a bit of sweetness, mix in a few chocolate candies or chocolate chips.

Frozen fruit shapes

If your kids like fruit, they’ll love this tasty frozen treat, especially on a hot day. Use cookie cutters to cut fruit slices into shapes, insert Popsicle sticks into the bottoms, and lay them out on a baking sheet covered in wax paper. Freeze the fruit shapes for at least an hour, and the kids will have healthy frozen pops made with nothing but real fruit. Melon works best for this snack, but any type of fruit you can slice will do. Try making mini-pops out of peaches or kiwi.

Banana hot dogs

This fun twist on a hot dog works great for an afternoon pick-me-up or for a quick breakfast-on-the-go. Spread peanut butter on the inside of a whole-wheat hotdog bun. Lay a banana in the bun, where the hotdog should go. Top it with honey, or even a drizzle of chocolate.

Mini Mexican pizzas

These mini Mexican pizzas are a mix between nachos and pizza. Lay round tortilla chips out on a baking sheet, and spread a light coating of your favorite salsa onto each chip. Sprinkle cheese over the salsa and bake for about 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted. If your kids like toppings, try black olives, green peppers, tomatoes or onions. You can spread refried beans under the salsa, or add a dollop of sour cream after they’re baked.

Create healthy snacks your kids can assemble. If they can make it themselves, they’ll be more likely to eat it.
