Sweet summer after-school treats

You likely remember this feeling: You spend all day at school, learning, socializing and eating yucky cafeteria food, just to come home and want something tasty. Heck, you might still get that same craving after a long day at work. There’s nothing more comforting than a sweet treat after a rough day, and yes, your kids have rough days too! Here are a few ways to treat the kiddies after school.

Cookie sandwich

Cookies are one of the quickest treats to whip up. With a little flour, sugar and egg, you can stir up some home-baked goodness in very little time. Still, cookies won’t cool the kids down after a long walk from the bus stop to your doorstep. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream between two cookies and now you have a homemade ice cream sandwich that’s made with love.

Yosicle®

Whose ‘sicle?! Yosicle®! Popsicle’s® new yogurt-based treat is a great, creamy way to cool down after a long day. It’s not ice cream and not quite an ice pop — it’s somewhere in between, offering the refreshing nature of fruit flavors with the cool, creamy appeal of traditional ice cream.

Ice pops

Ice pops like Popsicles® or homemade varieties hit the spot during the summer months when rising temperatures make you want to eat light. You can buy juice-based products in a store or make your own with an ice pop mold. Blend in chopped fruit for added texture.

After-school smoothie

Your kids might come home exhausted from school. Give them an energy pick-me-up with a homemade smoothie. Starting with Greek yogurt and ice, blend in bananas, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple and more for a healthy treat that only tastes high-calorie. It’s a great way to get the kids feeling energized enough to get going on homework. Plus, it’s easy to make, so kids old enough to handle a knife and a blender can make one on their own.

Frozen banana

Frozen bananas taste like ice cream! It sounds like one of those things moms say to their kids to make them eat fruit, but it’s true. Dipped in chocolate, bananas make one sweet treat that will boost energy. Simply insert a stick into a banana. Then, in a pot, melt chocolate chips or chocolate bars. Dip or drizzle the banana with chocolate and freeze. There you have it — a sweet treat that won’t break the bank or the belt.
