Tonight’s Dinner: Old-fashioned Salisbury steak

It’s not the 1950s anymore, but Salisbury steak is still delicious. Pair with sweet onions, and this classic dish moves to a whole new level.

There is something comforting about a classic meal. You might have seen Salisbury steak in frozen TV dinners or maybe on your childhood school cafeteria menu, but this is nothing like those. This is flavorful beef paired with soft sauteed onions all swimming in a rich, tasty broth. Trust us. It’s nothing like the Salisbury steak of your childhood!

Old-fashioned Salisbury steak recipe

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 1-1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/4 cup minced parsley
  • 1/4 cup minced shallots
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh cracked black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • Olive oil
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 cups beef stock
  • 1/3 cup dry red wine
  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon minced fresh thyme leaves

Directions:

  1. Mix together ground beef, parsley, shallots, salt and pepper. Divide equally into four oval-shaped patties. Gently dust patties with flour.
  2. In a large pan, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add seasoned patties and brown each side, about three minutes per side. Remove from pan and set aside.
  3. Add onions and sugar to pan and cook for about five minutes. Add in garlic, tomato paste, beef stock, red wine and thyme.
  4. Add meat back to pan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium low, cover and let simmer for 20 minutes.
  5. Serve patties with a side of garlic bread and top with stock and onions.
