Almond football and macadamia football helmets tutorial

Celebrate your inner fanhood with these almond footballs and macadamia helmets. Salty, clever and sweet.

Entertaining

Celebrating your team isn’t what it used to be. Tailgating and football soirees are now considered an art form. That includes the food, too. Spruce up a regular bowl of nuts with a little chocolate and love. These spirited treats make a great gift for the avid fan. Serve in little bowls as favors for guests, or they can be yummy cupcake toppers.

All you need are nuts, chocolate and/or candy melts. Try the football if you are a beginner in the kitchen or the football helmets for the more adventurous cook with a steady hand.

Ingredients:

For the footballs

  • Chocolate-covered almonds
  • White chocolate

For the football helmets

  • Macadamia nuts
  • Candy melts in your team helmet colors
  • Optional: Luster dust

Tools:

  • Sandwich bags or chocolate disposable piping bags
  • Toothpicks (for helmets only)
  • Styrofoam (for helmets only)

How-to make footballs:

1

Collect the nuts

Open your container of nuts and set them aside. Try not to eat them all as I sometimes do.

2

Prepare your chocolate or candy melts

Melt white chocolate (or white candy melts). Fill either a chocolate piping bag or sandwich bag and snip a tiny hole on the corner tip.

Tip: If you do not have the steadiest hand and don’t mind a little more prep work, fill an icing piping bag with coupler and tip. The piping tip will give you a steady, thin line.

3

Draw your football strings

Pipe a long line, then three small perpendicular lines. Once a few of the almonds have hardened, go back and pipe another line around each tip.

How to make football helmets:

1

Prepare the nuts

Stick each macadamia nut onto a toothpick.

2

Melt and dip

Melt candy melts and, holding the toothpick, dip one side of the macadamia nut. Once that side drips off excess candy melt, turn and dip another side.

3

Dry

Place toothpicks into Styrofoam (or fruits work as well) to dry.

4

Add sparkle

If your team’s helmets have a sparkle to them, feel free to brush a little luster dust onto the dipped portions. This is not necessary, but it adds a lovely touch.

5

Pipe

Melt and bag candy melts just as instructed for the almonds. Pipe out a very simplified version of your team’s logo. Here is a Patriot’s helmet, for example.

Tip: Your chocolate or candy melt will harden as it cools. Once it begins to firm up, squeeze out (or scoop with a spoon), melt and rebag to pipe more.

Ready to impress

Your nuts are ready to serve! Add them to cupcakes or place them in a pretty container and wrap them in cellophane to impress guests and friends. You can create football nuts for college or even high school!
