January detox: Start the year off right

Here’s how to get your body back in shape, starting with the way you think about food and drink. So a head-to-toe detox it is!

Cookies, brownies, pies, cakes, ham, cookies, turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cookies, sausage casserole, broccoli casserole, cosmos, cookies, wine, margaritas, Champagne cocktails, cookies…you get the picture. Some of us might have overindulged just a bit during the holidays.

If a cleanse is needed, try a three-day regimen where you omit sugar, dairy, meat, processed foods, caffeine and alcohol.

So what’s a girl to do to get back on track?

Start a January detox, from head to toe!

Starting at the head, you have to change and rewire, so to speak, the way you look at and think about foods. When you see a tray of brownies at your friend’s book party, do not view that tray as an evil plate. Pick up a brownie and enjoy it! Do not hoard the entire tray in the coat closet and gobble them all at once. Rewire your brain to see the good in everything, brownies included. You can have a brownie (and eat it, too!) and not suffer guilt, as long as you are living and eating right. The better you eat, the better you feel, and your sex life will even thank you!

Work out so that you can eat

A healthy lifestyle should be lived, every day, not just as a “New Year’s resolution” for the first six weeks of the year. Invest in a gym membership or commit to walking/running at least five days a week. Yoga is something you can do every day from anywhere. You can do yoga in a yoga studio, your bedroom, your living room or even a hotel room!

Eat healthy, all day every day!

Start your mornings with a healthy protein drink. Toss frozen fruit into the blender (frozen bananas work beautifully) in place of ice; then add 1/2 cup of lowfat Greek yogurt, soymilk or almondmilk, a handful of spinach and blend. Drink plenty of water. Eat fruit and vegetables like cherry tomatoes and carrots during the day for snacks, along with nuts. Make a decision to live a healthy lifestyle, and a diet will never even be in your vocabulary!
