PETA Vice President to Debate Rutgers University Debate Union

PETA is reporting that its Vice President, Bruce Friedrich, will be debating with Rutgers University Debate Union on the subject of whether meat is ethical or not.

I hope that Mr. Friedrich does not run into too much pigheadedness at a school known for its “Grease Trucks”.  Personally I find it completely unethical for most Americans to eat meat.  We treat animals as a commodity, their sole purpose in life to fatten themselves up for the slaughter.  In addition we live in a country and time where not eating meat has never been easier.

I wouldn’t say that eating meat is always unethical – I think that cultures that live on a subsistence lifestyle are more than justified in hunting for their food and I’d also say that individuals whether they’re from the developed or developing world who are struggling just to feed themselves and their families aren’t behaving unethically when they eat meat either.  Ultimately morality depends upon context; there are contexts where lying may be OK and there are contexts where killing another person may be OK.  Meat is not any different.

But why not tell us what, you think, is meat ethical, unethical, or a grey area?
