Zap! How to eliminate household static

After touching my computer and shocking it into off mode, I decided it is high time to eliminate the static electricity in my home. Walking across the carpet and shocking eachother may be great fun, but it’s also annoying and, as I learned, not computer-friendly. I turned to Handy Household Hints from Heloise (Rodale, 2010) for tips to eliminate the household static.

Winter weather can cause static

Have you noticed you’re more likely to shock your family members or the family pet during the winter? It’s because you’ve got the heater going, fire roaring in the fireplace, and the air in your home is dry, dry, dry. The easiest way to eliminate static is to raise your home air humidity.

How to eliminate household static

1. Create a simmer

Keep a large pot of water simmering on your stove. The steam will add moisture to the air. Just make sure the pot doesn’t boil dry.

2. Add some water-based decor

Place cups, bowls, or vases of water throughout your home, adding water as it evaporates. Turn these water vessels into home decor by putting flower buds in the cups or bowls, lining the bottoms with pretty stones or marbles, and keep bouquets of flowers in the vases.

3. Soothe the air

Put tabletop water fountains in your home to moisten the air and deliver the soothing sounds of a babbling brook. You’ll be more relaxed and static-free.

4. Spray away static cling

If getting shocked every time you touch something in your house isn’t bad enough, having your clothes cling to you for dear life is annoying and possibly even unsightly, depending on your attire. Fine-mist spray bottles can spritz out static cling on your clothing (and your hair!).

5. Get a vaporizer or humidifier

You can also buy a cool-mist vaporizer or humidifier to further increase the moisture in your home and eliminate the static.
