Miso Vegan: What inspired you to be a Tiny Green Mom?

Tiny Green Mom: In 2002, I was diagnosed with Epstein-Barr virus, and my world was turned upside-down! I am energetic person by nature, enjoying fitness and exercise immensely, and being told that I would have to slow down was really challenging! Rather than let the diagnosis win, I scoured books and websites on living an even cleaner, healthier lifestyle, and have since adopted a balanced approach in everything from my diet to exercise routine. Spirulina powder? Check! I drink it every morning! Now that I am a wife and mother, I have seen the benefits of eating natural, wholesome and organic foods, as well as cleaning the home with natural cleaners (think baking soda!), recycling and more, and I am introducing these values to my child. It is important to me that I am a healthy and happy mother, as that means I am taking care of myself, and able to care completely for my little one.

Miso Vegan: What are the benefits of families adopting a greener lifestyle?

Tiny Green Mom: Hands-down, a family adopting a greener lifestyle is setting the stage for a healthier existence and a healthier planet each and every day. Making conscious choices in our lives leads us to treat our bodies, and subsequently the earth, with care.

Miso Vegan: What are a few easy-to-implement changes families can make that will result in the biggest green difference?

Tiny Green Mom: As my tagline reads, “Mom Goes Green. One Tiny Step at a Time.” Choosing to do one thing every day that may seem insignificant, such as recycling a toilet paper roll, can make a huge impact. Just think of the impact one billion toilet paper rolls being recycled would have on the planet!

Further, a big change that will impact your food purchases without breaking the bank is the importance of reading labels and choosing your foods wisely. When going completely organic isn’t an option, choose three to five foods your family eats the most to purchase organically (and locally, for produce). Read the labels of various brands – does the label say sweet corn kernels and water, for instance, or does it have an additive you cannot pronounce? Remember the EWG’s “dirty dozen,” as well, and steer clear of any conventional produce on that list to avoid pesticide residue.
