Adopting a vegan lifestyle is a step in the green direction, but you can always do a little more to protect the environment and promote your family’s health. St Paddy’s Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate being eco-friendly for the good of our Earth. Here are five fun ways to go green for St Patrick’s Day.
Go green for St Patrick’s Day
1. Dig into your garden
Now’s the time to break ground on your home garden. Whether you have a large backyard plot or prefer container gardening, growing your own fruits, vegetables, and herbs is a healthy way of feeding your family that is also eco-friendly (as long as you aren’t overtreating your garden with pesticides and herbicides) and a fun eco-educational project that you can do with your kids.

2. Share your tasty green recipes with friends
If your non-vegan friends are still naysaying veganism because they are sure it won’t please their palate, convince them otherwise by inviting them over and serving your most delicious vegan recipes. You can have a vegan St Patrick’s Day celebration or set aside a day a month that you host a vegan dinner party. The more vegan palate-pleasing experiences your meat-eating friends have, the more likely they will incorporate more vegan or vegetarian meals into their diet.

Beer warning: While planning your St Patrick’s Day drink menu, steer clear of Guinness beer. Though it is one of the most popular St Paddy’s Day drinks, it is also processed with tissue from the air bladders of fish.
3. Green your technology
In addition to completely powering off your electronics at night (sleep or hibernate still uses energy), why not make green changes in the technology you use. A simple Internet search of green tech gadgets will give you dozens of electronics and tech accessories that have eco-friendly value.

4. Update your kitchenware
If you’re still using conventional nonstick cookware, you’re potentially releasing toxic fumes into your home. Switch to green cookware. Good brands include Bialetti Aeternum (a Top Chef Fabio Viviani favorite), Todd English Greenpan, and Starfrit.

5. Give to be green
Share your time, energy, and money with others that need it. Being charitable and teaching your kids the importance of charity is a green move that will help others and make you feel good, too. If you’re an avid exerciser, get involved with TeaminTraining.org and train for a cause. Volunteer at your local food bank or pet shelter. Donate money and resources to other nonprofits you believe in. Most recently, think about how to offer relief to those in Japan, suffering in the earthquake aftermath.
