Fun April Fool’s Day vegan food pranks

Though whoopee cushions and drawers full of packing peanuts will get lots of laughs on April Fool’s Day, you can take your fooling into the kitchen and have some culinary fun with these vegan food pranks.
Though whoopee cushions and drawers full of packing peanuts will get lots of laughs on April Fool’s Day, you can take your fooling into the kitchen and have some culinary fun with these vegan food pranks.

Fish Sticks

You can horrify your best vegan friends by inviting them over for fish and chips. But instead of breading fish, simply cut pressed firm tofu into thick rectangles, coat with a soymilk flour batter and roll in breadcrumbs or crushed corn flakes. Bake until crispy and serve with potato wedges.

Vegetable Pot Pie

Super fun for the kids, simply cut and shape various chewy candies to resemble vegetables, mix them with soy or coconut-based yogurt and pour into a pie plate. Top with a baked vegan crust or shredded phyllo and serve. Unless you want to eat dessert for dinner, have real veggie pot pies waiting in the oven.

Sponge Cake

Buy a bag of plain kitchen sponges and cut them so they stack up like a real layered spongecake. Put them on a cake plate and generously cover with frosting. Decorate with colored icing, sprinkles, crushed cookies, or even edible flowers and set it on the table for dessert, letting one of your friends or family members slice the first piece.

Fool’s Cupcakes

Make your favorite vegan burger mixture and cook it in cupcake liners. Make a batch of mashed potatoes and dye them with natural food color to look like icing. Slather it on the “cupcakes” as “frosting” and serve.

Fried Eggs

A kid-friendly food prank, heat 1 tablespoon of vegan margarine in a saucepan over low heat. Stir in a handful of vegan marshmallows, stirring until smooth and the melted mixture starts to bubble. Pour marshmallow mixture into 2 blobs onto a sheet of generously greased aluminum foil, using the back of a spoon to spread them into flat rounds to form the “egg whites”. Form two dried apricots into domes to resemble egg yolks and place an apricot in the center of each round. Let “eggs” set. Use a spatula to transfer them to a plate. Rub the yolks with a little oil to give them a shiny appearance to look more authentic.
