Geeky Food: Everything you ever wanted to know about yeast (VIDEO)

Admit it: Yeast is probably not a subject you think about very often. But I bet that you do eat bread, and drink wine and beer, on a pretty regular basis. So isn’t it a shame we don’t know how or why they’re made?

One of the things I love about this series is that it’s seriously easy to geek out on interesting food facts. Maybe yeast is not something I ever thought I’d want to learn about, but boy did I learn! And I learned a lot. Things that, seriously, you need to know if you consider yourself a bread eater or wine and beer drinker (and, if you’re not, then who are you exactly?).

For instance, did you know that it’s a fungus? Or, more importantly, that it’s rich in B vitamins? Maybe next time you drink wine, you can feel good about the nutrients you’re getting — I know I will! And do you know exactly what produces alcohol? Looks like you’ll need to watch the video to find out!

One of the most fascinating facts, I thought, is that baking yeast has been traced back to ancient Egypt. Who knew? Watch the video to find out more about your favorite ingredient. Because, admit it: Without yeast (and wine), life really wouldn’t be worth living, would it?
