This ‘Finding Dory’ cake is the treat your kids will be asking for all summer
I know, Dory is the star of the new movie Finding Dory. But Hank the cephalopod is the one who stole our hearts — with all seven of his tentacles. So we’re honoring him in cake form.
Yes, really.
We could have gotten away with an easy Dory cake. But no. We went for broke. We chose crazy. We chose Hank.
Are you actually going to make this cake? Maybe! Or maybe you just want to watch the magic happen. But just in case, here’s the recipe.

Finding Dory Hank cake recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 boxes vanilla cake mix (plus eggs and vegetable oil as directed)
- 3 cups frosting
- 12 cups Rice Krispies cereal
- 6 tablespoons butter
- 2 bags marshmallows
- Red fondant
- Orange fondant
- White fondant
- Black fondant
- Blue fondant
- Corn syrup
Directions:
- Bake the cakes. We used a comma pan and a Barbie skirt pan, but any cone-shaped pan will do.
- Trim the cakes to begin the shape of the octopus head.
- Frost each cake separately, and then attach them by gently pressing them together. Refrigerate while you prepare your tentacles.
- Melt the butter, add the marshmallows, and melt on medium heat.
- Add the Rice Krispies, and combine. Let cool for a few minutes before molding. It will be a little easier to work with.
- Separate the mixture into 7, roll out into log shapes, and pinch and roll 1 end to begin a tentacle shape.
- Roll out the dark white fondant, and cut out small circles (we did 3 different sizes). Then, using a ball tool or end of a pen, indent each one into a shallow little cup. Let dry and harden.
- Roll out the dark orange and light orange fondants. Cut out shapes of dark orange using your tentacles as a guide. You want enough to cover 3/4 of the tentacle and leave the last 1/4 open. Cut smaller strips of the light orange, fill in the uncovered Rice Krispies, and smooth in to blend in with the dark orange fondant.
- Using a bit of corn syrup as glue, lightly dab the back of each round, and attach the octopus suckers to the arms. Let dry. (While an octopus has eight legs, Hank lost one, so he’s got only seven.)
- Skewer each octopus leg.
- Place into the frosted cake all the way around.
- Roll out a large sheet of reddish orange fondant, and cover the whole head and body of Hank. Trim and blend into the fondant on the legs, and smooth all around.
- Using white fondant, roll out 2 parts for the eyes. Roll out the blue and black fondants separately, and cut out 2 of each for the irises and pupils. Using a tiny bit of water or corn syrup, attach to the white fondant.
- Roll out another sheet of reddish orange fondant, and cut out shapes for the upper and lower eyelids.
- Attach the eyeballs first to the top of the head, using a little water and toothpicks to anchor them (try to keep the toothpicks toward the top and bottom so they get covered by the eyelids).
- Attach the eyelids (gently pinch the tops to give the brow effect).
- Smooth the eyelid fondant into the head.
- Steam to seal.
