5 Delicious ways to make breakfast in bed

The distinctive scent of freshly brewed coffee and hot buttered toast is just about the yummiest thing in the world to wake up to! Next time you want to spoil your other half with a delicious breakfast in bed, try one of these fun and tasty recipes.

There’s something so luxurious and decadent about eating breakfast in the comfort of your own bed. If you want to spoil someone in your life, tuck into these simple recipes to earn some serious brownie points!

Breakfast in bed option 1:

Egg and toast soldiers

An oldie but a goodie, a soft boiled each with toast soldiers is a favourite in just about any household! The key to getting this right is in the eggs: the whites need to be firm, and the yolks soft and runny so they’re ideal for dipping. To achieve this, bring water to a boil and then reduce the heat to medium, and gently lower your eggs into the water. Boiling for 5-6 minutes should procure a beautifully soft-boiled egg (or two!), which is best served with a piece of hot buttered toast (per egg), sliced into three fingers.

Breakfast in bed option 2:

Breakfast picnic

This is a bit of a cheaters way out, but it’s perfect for those of us who are time-poor and yet still have the best intentions! Before your partner wakes up (or the afternoon before), head to the bakery and buy an assortment of baked treats: finger buns, scones, strudels, savoury muffins and croissants are all good options. Arrange a basket of baked goodies on a tray with a small dish of butter and another with strawberry jam, and serve it with a tall glass of ice cold orange juice.

Breakfast in bed option 3:

French toast

In France, it’s known simply as le pain perdu, which means “the lost bread.” Thankfully, you’ve found this recipe so you can create a French affair in your own bedroom!

Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon or vanilla extract
  • Butter for the pan (or vegetable oil spray, to lighten the calories)
  • 4 slices of bread, cut in half in triangles
  • Icing sugar and maple syrup

Method

  1. Combine eggs and milk in a bowl, whipping together with a fork.
  2. Place a frying pan on medium heat, and either melt a little butter or spritz with oil spray.
  3. Dip each piece of bread into the egg mixture, making sure both sides are moistened.
  4. Add the slices of bread to the hot pan, turning after 2-3 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle with a light dusting of icing sugar and drizzle with maple syrup.

Breakfast in bed option 4:

Happy eggs

This is a cute twist on an old favourite: it’s scrambled eggs, but presented in a sweet way that makes it perfect for kids and adults alike.

Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • Dash of milk
  • 2 sultanas
  • 2 pieces of toast
  • 1 small carrot
  • Salt to taste

Method

  1. Place a frying pan on the stove at a medium heat.
  2. Mix eggs together in bowl and add a dash of milk, plus salt to taste.
  3. Place two circular egg rings in the frying pan, and pour the runny egg mixture into each bowl (if you don’t have egg rings, simply pour the eggs into the pan, and you can cut out circles afterwards with a knife).
  4. Toast two pieces of bread while the eggs are cooking; it should take around 4 minutes to fry the eggs until cooked almost all the way through.
  5. Remove the rings from the eggs and place each circle of egg on a piece of toast. If you don’t have egg rings, transfer the cooked egg (which should resemble an omelette) to a cutting board, and cut out two circles of egg.
  6. Position the two sultanas as “eyes” and cut out a triangle from the carrot to use as a “nose.” Your eggs now look like two adorable baby duck/chick faces! Serve immediately to avoid the eggs turning rubbery.

Breakfast in bed option 5:

Champagne breakfast

If you’re celebrating a special occasion, like a birthday or Mother’s Day, a Champagne breakfast always goes down a treat. The star of the show here is the sparkling French wine, which is best served in a tall crystal champagne flute, adorned with a fresh strawberry. You need some food to fill their belly or the fizz will go to their head, but this calls for a delicate menu: bacon and eggs are too greasy, pancakes too heavy and French toast is too rich. Our suggestion is a simple breakfast tray that includes a fresh fruit salad, a couple of pieces of sourdough toast and some chunky strawberry jam or marmalade. Be sure to keep the Champagne on standby in an ice bucket for refills, too!
