From mud pies to sandpit cakes, kids love getting their hands messy and flexing their creative muscles. Pop them in a chef’s hat, whack the apron on and get them into the kitchen for some fun!
There are many reasons to get your kids in the kitchen! Not only will it teach them about cooking, the kitchen and developing a positive relationship with food, but it will also encourage them to take responsibility for what they eat and keep them entertained for that little bit longer!
Funny face
Afternoon snacks can be a whole lot of fun when this funny-faced clown joins them at the table! This is a great way for the very little ones to get involved and is also a clever method to get them eating fruit and veggies. Choose a range of ingredients, get creative and have a laugh!
Ingredients:
- 1 carrot
- 1 stick of celery
- 1 slice of cheese
- 1 orange
- A handful of sultanas
Method:
- Peel and chop the carrot into two sticks for eyebrows.
- Chop the celery into a small stick for a nose.
- Cut the cheese into two circles for eyes.
- Quarter the orange.
- Find a large plate and arrange your ingredients to form a face: Carrot eyebrows, cheese eyes, a celery nose, sultana freckles and a quarter-orange mouth. Cute!
Note: Experiment and add other ingredients for hair, ears and other facial features!
Cute ice cubes
If you have a hard time encouraging your kids to drink water when all of their friends are indulging in soft drink, add a bit of fun to their glasses with these gorgeous ice cubes.
Ingredients:
- A handful of your favourite berries
- Fresh water
- An ice cube tray
Method:
- Chop up the larger berries like strawberries and cherries, and leave blueberries whole.
- Place them in the ice cube tray and fill the cube slots with water. Freeze.
- Pop a few cubes into glasses for a colourful summer treat!
Wrap it!
If your kids are feeling peckish and lunchtime’s rolling around, teach them how to construct their own fresh wraps. This is an easy way to mix up the typical lunch sandwich and will mean they’re also getting their veggie fix.
Ingredients:
- Leftover chicken, turkey or beef
- Cucumber
- Carrot
- Tomato
- Cheese
- Wholemeal wrap
- Lettuce
- Dressing (optional)
Method:
- Heat any leftover meat you may have from last night’s dinner.
- Chop the cucumber and carrot into sticks, slice the tomato and grate the cheese.
- Layer the meat and veggies on top of the wrap, drizzle with a little dressing and top with cheese.
- Wrap up and enjoy! You can even stick a toothpick flag in the top for a bit of festive fun.
