Don’t get us wrong — we love cupcakes as much as the next gal. But sometimes it’s nice to have something a little different for a change. These baked treats are sure to hit the spot.
We’ve had a long love affair with cupcakes: chocolate, we can’t live without you; vanilla, so delicate and satisfying; red velvet, you make us swoon. And there’s no sign of the cupcake trend letting up. But variety is the spice of life, is it not? And sometimes a girl just wants something new to tempt her tastebuds. Step aside, cupcake — if only temporarily. We’ve found other sweets that suit our fancy.
Doughnuts
We keep hearing about more gourmet doughnut purveyors popping up with their wares — and these ain’t your run-of-the-mill doughnuts from the local chain. Try your hand at making these treats, and you may never pick up a dozen at the drive-through again. Chocolate lovers, brace yourselves — these homemade chocolate doughtnuts may be life-changing. And these baked apple doughtnuts are rolled in butter and sugar; need we say more? Simply delicious.
Scones
One of our favourite accompaniments to a warm pot of tea is a crumbly scone. With St. Patrick’s Day coming up, why not whip up a batch of these sweet Irish scones to enjoy? Equally delicious are these almond scones (the subtle flavour makes it perfect at any meal of the day); or, if you want more of a jolt, try these banana coffee scones.
Macarons
Not to be confused with coconut macaroons, macarons are delicate French meringue-based confections composed of merigue shell with a filling of jam, ganache or buttercream. These dainty treats can be finicky to make, but succeed and you will be rewarded — just don’t gobble them all up at once! Try this recipe for Parisian macarons — notoriously a delicate process, so don’t be too discouraged if your first batch is less than perfect.
Whoopie pies
For a moment there, it seemed like whoopie pies were about to steal the spotlight from cupcakes — and then cupcakes grabbed back their crown. Still, we have a soft spot for these soft, homemade sandwich cookies. This classic whoopie pie recipe is a good starter one, and if you’re making a batch for an adult-only affair, you can’t go wrong with these spiked peppermint mocha whoopie pies.
