Try a Caesar!

The Bloody Caesar (or just Caesar) is undoubtedly a delicious drink! The CBC news touted it as Canada’s favourite cocktail in 2009, and it appears to be just as popular today. Pubs and restaurants across the nation have embraced this lively cocktail, and it’s not uncommon to see “Caesar Saturdays” or “Caesar Sundays” headlining as a weekend drink feature. Here are four recipes to try.

The classic Bloody Caesar

Serving size 1

Ingredients:

  • Celery salt for rimming
  • 1 lime wedge
  • 1-1/2 ounces vodka
  • 4 ounces Clamato juice
  • 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 or more dashes (to taste) Tabasco sauce
  • Dash of celery or kosher salt
  • Dash of freshly ground pepper
  • Celery stalk to garnish

Directions:

  1. Rim a highball or cooler glass with the lime then the celery salt.
  2. Add the vodka and Clamato juice to the glass. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, salt and pepper.
  3. Fill the glass with ice.
  4. Garnish with the celery stalk and lime wedge.

The hair of the dog Caesar

Serving size 1

Ingredients: 

  • Montreal steak spice for rimming
  • 1 lime wedge
  • 2 ounces vodka
  • 4 ounces Clamato (or extra-spicy Clamato)
  • 3 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 dashes Tabasco sauce
  • Kosher salt to taste
  • Freshly ground pepper
  • 2 pickled pepperoncini peppers to garnish

Directions:

  1. Rim a cocktail or cooler glass with the lime and the steak spice.
  2. Pour in the vodka, Clamato juice and seasonings. Stir to combine.
  3. Fill the glass with ice, and garnish with the peppers and the lime wedge. For extra flavour, add a splash of the pepperoncini pickle juice, and mix well.

The Mexican Caesar

Serving size 1

Ingredients:

  • Kosher or sea salt
  • 3 lime wedges
  • 2 ounces tequila
  • 4 ounces Clamato juice
  • 2 dashes Louisiana-style hot sauce
  • 3 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

Directions: 

  1. Rim a cooler or pint glass with the lime and sea salt.
  2. Add the tequila, Clamato juice, hot sauce and Worcestershire sauce, and mix.
  3. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Squeeze in the juice of three lime pieces, then add the wedges to the drink.
  5. Add ice and serve.

The seafood Caesar

Serving size 1

Ingredients:

  • Sea salt and celery salt
  • 1 lemon wedge
  • 1-1/2 ounces vodka
  • 4 ounces Clamato juice
  • 2 dashes hot sauce
  • 1–2 teaspoons cocktail sauce (as desired)
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
  • 3 large cooked and cleaned shrimp or prawns

Directions:

  1. Rim a cooler or pint glass with lemon and a mixture of the celery and sea salt.
  2. Add the vodka, Clamato juice, hot sauce, cocktail sauce, salt and pepper, and mix well.
  3. Fill the glass with ice.
  4. Thread the shrimp or prawns onto a bamboo skewer or large cocktail toothpick.
  5. Add to the glass, and garnish with the lemon wedge.
