How “fizzy yoga” can help your body and mind

The Sex and the City star credits her “fizzy” yoga routine with helping her body bounce back after an acting-related injury. But what exactly is it?

Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall had quite the painful time during her three-month stint performing in Tennessee Williams’ Sweet Bird of Youthon London’s West End. The intense, physical performances left her with “bruises bigger than a professional snowboarder.”

The actress knew she needed to get into shape — and pronto — but she didn’t want to turn to intense workouts.

“As I get older, I find that cardio is less important to me,” the 56-year-old actress told The Times of London. “What I want to do more of is intense stretching.”

Enter physio-yoga — or, as Cattrall calls it, “fizzy yoga.”

The practice combines one-on-one physical therapy with massage, yoga, body-alignment adjustments and meditative breathing, all in one 60-minute session.

“It helps to awaken certain muscle groups,” Cattrall’s New York–based yoga trainer Diana Zotos told Yahoo! Shine. Zotos first evaluates her clients and then creates a personalized plan tailored to their body and injuries, she said.

“It’s the safest form of yoga,” Zotos said, adding that all instructors who focus on physio-yoga are trained in both physical therapy and yoga. “You’re not going to get hurt.”

It’s obviously working for Cattrall! She estimates that it can burn 300–600 calories a session, but it’s more about the healing and strength that come as a result of regular practice. The only downside? A session can cost $200 an hour. However, the benefits you receive are worth far more than $200, says Wendy Erven, a Pilates trainer based in Omaha, Nebraska.

“It appears to me that ‘fizzy yoga’ was developed by a physiotherapist — we call them physical therapists in the U.S. — who uses yoga in her treatment programs. When you get the expertise of a physical therapist who is combining the (very popular) yoga with ‘prehab,’ rehab and post-rehab techniques, you’re bound to see results in alignment, centering and stress reduction,” Erven told SheKnows.

And meditation helps bring it all together.

“Regular meditation alone can literally change people’s lives mentally and emotionally,” Erven said. “Add meditation to a well-rounded yoga practice, with a few individualized prehab and rehab techniques, and the results are a true mind-body connection.

“I give it a thumbs-up for results.”
