9 Totally weird things you can do with lube

You can do WHAT with lube? Aside from making sex go more smoothly, lubricant has other uses that are just plain practical. It can fix your hair, help your marathon time and more. Next time you hit the drugstore, you might want to stock up.

1

Improving your sports performance

“I actually have a customer who does marathons and the Iron Man competitions who swears that silicone lube is the perfect anti-chafing solution. He puts it on his nipples and the inner thighs,” says sexologist Brian Parker, Ph.D., owner of ForeverPleasure.com. Uberlube touts this as one of its myriad of functions.

2

Breaking in your new kicks

“Silicone lube is great for avoiding blisters in new shoes or anywhere clothing would chafe, too,” says Camilla Lombard, events and publicity manager at Good Vibrations sex toy shop.

3

Moisturizing dry skin

“I know many people who use silicone lubes as massage oil and as hand moisturizers as well,” Parker says.

You can use cream lube like body lotion, says Carol Queen, Ph.D., staff sexologist at Good Vibrations. Please Cream is a good example.

Or go very natural (and delicious). “Coconut oil, which is used as a sexual lubricant, is great for dry skin,” says Alyssa Dweck, M.D., author of V is for Vagina.

4

Perfecting your hairstyle

Silicone lube can be handier (not to mention cheaper) than some anti-flyaway hair products on the market. “[It] adds great shine to hair,” Lombard says. If you want more hold than smoothing action, go for a gel. “Gel lube is especially good as a hair gel substitute,” says Queen.

5

Easing a stuck ring off your finger

“In the labor room and operating room, we have used lube to remove patients’ wedding rings prior to surgery when they are too tight to take off,” Dweck says.

6

Shining your shoes

“With silicone lube, you can polish your fancy latex dress or your patent leather,” says Queen.

7

Loosening a doorknob or a lock

“K-Y Jelly came in very handy in my office with a jammed doorknob when a patient got stuck in the bathroom,” Dweck says. The same goes for sticky door locks: “I just put a drop on the key,” says Risa Goodman-Rice, social media specialist at Good Vibrations.

8

Making crafts

“Glycerin can be used to make snow globes,” says Robert Morgan Lawrence, co-founder of the Center for Sex and Culture. You can also use it for crafts, like preserving leaves.

9

Fixing your bike — and other household items

“Silicone lube is used as an industrial lube,” Morgan says. “Bicycle chains in a pinch, hair clippers, small appliances and as a protectant against rust too.”
