Marriage proposals come in many shapes and sizes. From Twitter proposals to Home Depot flash dances, the moment before all the yessing and the sobbing has become just as important as the answer itself. Bust out your tissues, ladies, because none of the other proposals you’ve watched on YouTube come close to this one. In fact, it’s so epic, thousands of boyfriends about to propose have broken out in hives.
On September 30, 2010, University of Montana student Jack Hyer went on a first date with Rebecca Strellnaur. It went so well, he wrote in his travel journal afterward: “I’m going to marry this girl eventually.”
Swoon, am I right? I can’t even get a guy to pick up the check.
From that day forward, Hyer spent four years traveling the globe while secretly building the most-epic proposal video of all time. Four years and 26 countries later, his masterpiece was complete: A video of him lip-synching The Proclaimers’ “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” as, you know, he’s literally doing so.
After they graduated from UM this month, Hyer tricked Strellnaur into thinking they were going to watch his “graduation slideshow,” and… well, watch the video!

“I’ve been on many adventures,” he said just before breaking out the ring, “I’ve traveled on elephant, on camelback, hiked to the lowest point on the Earth and have gotten to see some of the highest. But the best adventure I’ve had is loving Becca.”
Oh. Em. Gee. There I go again, I’m all verklempt. Kleenex, stat!
This officially changes the face of marriage proposals as we know it. I’m imagining many a boyfriend who wants to propose now hyperventilating into a paper bag (which I like to call, “Monday morning”).
What makes this so epic isn’t just the years of work he put into gathering and editing the footage, but the fact that he knew after the first date he wanted to marry her. After a first date, I can’t even decide if I want him to walk me to a cab… but then realize I have to since I ran out of money when I picked up the check.
Oh yeah, and she said yes.
