7 Reasons you should hula hoop

Hula hooping isn’t just for kids. Here are seven reasons why hooping is great for adults, too.

t

t When was the last time you saw someone hula hooping? It was probably a child, but did you know that there is an entire subculture of hula hooping for adults?

t Why, you ask? There are seven reasons.

t

Fitness

t Hula hooping is a great way to get in shape. When you really get into it, you’re working all of the muscles in your body. It’s not scientifically proven, but if you waist hoop around your belly long enough, you’re bound to see results. It strengthens your core, all while doing cardio.

t

Fun

t The best part about hula hooping is that you’re usually having so much fun, you don’t even realize you’re working out. And let’s face it, what’s more awesome than spinning around a colorful circle and moving your hips? Not only is hula hooping itself fun, but the process is amazing. You begin to learn how to move your body and make the hula hoop your dance partner. After lots of trial and error, you learn lots of tricks, and there is no limit to what you can do. It’s also so hard not to smile when you’re doing it.

t

Peace

t Hooping can become a spiritual experience when you let go of the environment and become one with the hoop as you move around its center. When you’re hooping in your bubble, nothing else matters. Some even compare the feeling to yoga practice.

t

Crafts

t We’re not talking about your average hula hoop from a retail store right now. When you get into the hoop community, you will start to realize that most heavyweight, adult-size hula hoops are handmade out of irrigation tubing and fancy-looking tapes. And believe it or not, it’s very easy and addicting to make hoops with the color combos of your wildest dreams.

t

Beauty

t Well, maybe not with your first spin, but eventually, hooping will start to make you feel beautiful and even graceful. There’s something about getting into the groove of hooping that makes you feel like a figure skater or a gymnast — or like Julia Stiles in Save the Last Dance.

t

Friends

t There’s nothing like a hoop friend. I tend to refer to the hooping community as a sorority of sorts. Not only do you gain hoop sisters in your first class, but anywhere you go with a hoop or see someone with one, you are automatically emotionally connected. When you meet one, you automatically know what kind of heart she has because you’re both willing to dance in the streets.

t

Nostalgia

t Picture it: You’re 9 years old in gym class, and the teacher is passing out hula hoops. You put one around your waist with excitement because you know you got this. It falls down after three spins, but you still laugh hysterically because it was awesome. You try and try again, and each spin is just that much better, and you get that much happier. Hooping holds the same feelings for an adult.

t Stay tuned to learn more about the world of hooping.
