t Well, it’s happened again. Another year is upon us. What can you do to make this year a good one?
t
Be kind
t Kindness goes a long way. Something about putting aside your own needs and desires while positively influencing others really does the soul good. Being kind can be as simple as smiling at a passing stranger or saying a kind word to a co-worker. Every one of your actions has an effect on your emotional and spiritual well-being. Don’t be afraid to start small. There’s no need to get caught up in worrying about grand gestures of kindness. Positivity adds up — trust me.
t
Spend time with people who make you feel good
t This one might seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised. The people you surround yourself with have a huge impact on your mental state. Are you spending time with people whom you love or care about? Chances are, you’re probably feeling pretty good. On the other hand, spending time with those who don’t appreciate you can easily create an atmosphere of negativity that won’t feel good for anyone involved.
t It’s a new year, so you should decide what kind of people you want to have in your life. It makes a bigger difference than you’d think.
t
Let go
t We all have things from our past that we’re still attached to. It can come in the form of a past relationship, a dysfunctional friendship or just lingering feelings of negativity. As much as we’d like to try to relive our old memories, we can’t. Instead of letting these feelings eat you up and bring you down, just let go. Realize that today indeed is a new day and that you are the one in control of your future. Once you wrap your head around this fact, it’s incredibly freeing. There’s no reason you can’t be an entirely new you in 2014.
t
Look forward
t What do you want to do this year? Are you finally ready to try that half-marathon or maybe that hike through the wilderness you’ve always talked about? Or do you just want to hang out with your friends more? Great — do it! Life is better when we have things to look forward to.
t Instead of letting 2014 quickly fade back into routine, focus on doing things you’ve never done before (or at least on doing things you want to do). That way, each weekend becomes an exciting journey. Each moment is something new. That way, when you look back at the end of the year, you’ll have things to smile about. In the end, that’s really all that matters, right?
t There you have it. We’ve laid out the steps to making 2014 a positive and uplifting year. Why settle for anything less?
