Anne Sage of City Sage shares her cool and fresh California morning routine.

t Lately the long hours of work have been conspiring with the summer heat to leave me utterly drained by the time 3 o’clock rolls around.
Ease into the day
t Since retiring to the couch for a nap isn’t exactly an option, I try to prevent that wilted feeling altogether by easing in to each day. It begins with resisting the urge to reach for my phone right away and choosing a quiet activity instead. Reading, doing a crossword puzzle, or washing the dishes is the perfect way to start the morning with a sense of order.

Start moving
t Next up is a bit of activity before the sun makes even wiggling a pinky finger seem like a major effort. Sometimes it’s just a stroll through the neighborhood with the dog, or sometimes it’s a jaunt to a nearby workout studio, but as long as I get my heart rate pumping I feel more prepared to sit at the computer for the next 10 hours.
t
Power breakfast
t Last but not least, the right breakfast makes all the difference! It can be tricky to find a meal that gets me through to lunch without also weighing me down, but lately a smoothie made with fresh berries, nut butter and yogurt are just what the doctor ordered. Wash it all down with a tall glass of water, pop some vitamins and I’m all set to dive into the day.
