Food recall: Certain almond and peanut butters may have salmonella

A variety of almond and peanut butters have been recalled.

Pay attention if you have peanut butter or almond butter made by nSPIRED Natural Foods, such as MaraNatha brand. The company has recalled some of the products due to possible salmonella contamination, the Food and Drug Administration says.

The company says four illnesses have been reported that could be tied to the nut butters, which were sold in glass and plastic jars. The products potentially affected include the following:

• Arrowhead Mills peanut butters
• MaraNatha almond butters and peanut butters
• Some lots of private-label almond butters sold at Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Kroger and Safeway

The recall pertains to 45 production lots, which were sold in the U.S., Canada, the Dominican Republic, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates.

Upon testing the nut butters, the FDA said it did not know how many jars were in the recall, and the company would not comment.

Here’s what to look for if you suspect salmonella infection: abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Symptoms can arise within a day or so of exposure and last up to a week.
