Love is a tricky game… and the focal point of a slew of reality TV shows. The new addition to the pack? A&E’s Love Prison, which is about online daters who are taking their connection offline for the first time.
The duos meet up with their cyber significant others on a deserted island to test their relationship and see if sparks will fly IRL. They get no technology, no outside contact. Just each other. In one room. In one bed. For one week.
Compelling, maybe, but let’s take a moment to dissect why this feels a tad unfair to the pairs involved. How many couples’ first dates entail a week-long getaway on an island? How many (even long-term) couples would survive alone in a house with no technology or outside contact to speak of? Why is the show called Love Prison?
Spending one-on-one time with anyone for a week, in close quarters, with no distractions, is bound to ruffle feathers on some levels. Maybe these couples will emerge from the house after a week smelling like roses, but I’m not sure I would — whether my relationship was brand-spanking new, still in the honeymoon phase or long-term.
On that note, maybe I could see this sort of “prison sentence” working as a therapeutic endeavor for some couples looking to reconnect. Shut out all other distractions, and just focus on the relationship for one whole week. If you can’t work things out at that point, it might be time to throw in the towel. But with newbie couples? I don’t know. I’m in more of an “ease your way in” state of mind in budding relationships.
Anyway, you can decide for yourself when Love Prison premieres tonight at 10 p.m ET on A&E. In the meantime, check out the promo below.
