This pesky bug can wreak havoc on your summer plans! What can you do to prevent you and your loved ones from getting covered in itchy red bites? Read on for some ideas!
Insect repellent
Load up on the bug spray! Insect repellents are an effective way to combat this summertime warrior. A product that contains DEET is widely considered an effective weapon in the war against mosquito bites, but there are several products on the market, so it’s important to read the label on each to make the right choice for you and your family. Bug repellent is quite harsh, so follow the instructions, avoid spraying it near the mouth, eyes and open wounds and use it in a well-ventilated area only.
Cover up
Create a barrier by covering up as much as possible. While it’s not always practical to stay covered up in the heat of the summer sun, keeping your skin covered by wearing long sleeves and pants will help reduce the number of bites you may get. The tenacious mosquito can bite through thin clothing to get what it wants, so give yourself extra protection by spraying a layer of bug spray on your clothes. Wearing lighter-coloured clothing will also help deter mosquitoes, as they are attracted to dark colours.
Be odour-free
Mosquitoes are attracted to certain scents, such as floral perfumes and body odour. Keep yourself as odour-free as you can by avoiding heavily fragranced toiletries, and shower frequently.
Be aware of mosquito hot spots
Still or swampy water areas are breeding grounds for this little critter, so try to avoid them when planning your outdoor activities. To help keep mosquitoes away from your yard, check the areas around your home that may have standing water, such as plant pots or drainage ditches, and keep them water-free.
Watch the doors and windows
Mosquitoes seem to know right where to find you — even if you’re indoors ! To prevent a house full of unwelcome guests, check that your window and door screens are in good repair, without any holes for them to sneak through. Keep doors closed as much as possible.
Other ideas
- Citronella candles or mosquito coils will help keep the pesky bugs away from decks and other seating areas.
- Consider avoiding outdoor activities during dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are at their most active.
