Turkish grilled cheese
Have you ever met anyone who didn’t like grilled cheese? We didn’t think so. With so many variations of the classic dish, there is one for even the toughest food critic. Try this recipe, and we’re sure you’ll fall in love.
Ingredients:
- 8 slices crusty bread or 4 Berber breads sliced in half
- 7 ounces Canadian medium cheddar, sliced
- 1/2 cup chopped dates
- 1/2 teaspoon ground fennel seeds
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
Directions:
- Distribute the Canadian cheddar on four slices of bread. Then evenly distribute dates and fennel on top of the cheese, and place the remaining pieces of bread on top.
- Butter both sides of the sandwiches.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat, and cook the sandwiches for approximately 4 minutes.
Tomato mac and cheese
We all grew up on this Canadian staple, and it’s hard to find anyone who doesn’t love some old-fashioned macaroni and cheese. Give it some kick by adding tomatoes, and enjoy this nutritious meal for dinner or lunch.
Ingredients:
- 1 pound macaroni
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 2 or 3 garlic cloves, chopped
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1-1/2 cups milk
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1/4 cup tomato paste
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano or 1 tablespoon fresh oregano
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley
- 12 ounces Canadian mild cheddar, grated
- Salt and ground pepper
Directions:
- Cook the pasta according to its package, but for 1 minute less.
- Melt the butter and brown the garlic and onion for 2 minutes.
- Mix the milk and flour, then pour it into a saucepan. Stir using a whisk, and simmer until the mixture thickens.
- Add the tomato paste, oregano and parsley.
- Incorporate the Canadian cheddar gradually, then season.
- Add the pasta, stir, reheat and serve at once.
Havarti chicken salad and apple wrap
Autumn’s just around the corner, and fresh apples will soon be in abundance everywhere. This wrap will take you about 15 minutes to prepare, and it makes for a perfect lunch or mid-afternoon snack.
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1-1/2 cups cooked chicken, diced
- 1/2 cup apple, finely diced
- 4 medium-size whole-wheat tortillas
- 4 lettuce leaves
- 4 slices Canadian havarti
Directions:
- Mix together the mayonnaise, chicken and apple in a bowl.
- Top the tortillas with lettuce, havarti and chicken salad.
- Fold one end over about 1 inch to keep the filling in, and roll up tightly.
