The single life: Fun ways to spend your time

When all your friends are constantly spending time with their significant others, it can be easy to feel left out. But rather than sitting around feeling sorry for yourself, make the most of single life in some of these fun ways.

You don’t need a partner to have fun!

Meet new people

If you happen to be the single girl within a group of coupled-up friends, the important thing to remember is that you don’t need a boyfriend to have fun. Find other people who share your interests and with whom you don’t have to worry about feeling single. If there’s someone at work or at one of your usual activities you think you might get along with, show them you’re interested in being friends. If you’re having trouble meeting new people, check out websites such as meetup.com, where you can find groups of people in your area with similar interests. Or join a team, group or club in your area. There are all kinds of sports teams, creative groups and book clubs that are more than willing to take on new members. Just because some of the people you know only want to talk about their significant others, it doesn’t mean everyone’s that way. So the next time your friend says she can’t hang out because she has a date night, make a fun date of your own with someone new.

Find hobbies that challenge you

There’s an old saying that goes “idle hands are the devil’s work.” Although the wording is a little overdramatic for our tastes, the general sentiment is a sound one. If you spend your nights sitting at home moaning over the fact that you don’t have someone to snuggle up to, of course you’ll wind up feeling sad, bored and alone. But if you keep your hands and mind busy with a task you enjoy and find challenging, you’ll be better for it. Consider picking up knitting, sewing, painting, photography, cooking, running, biking, volunteering or any other activities that interest you.

Use your creative power

Imagination can be a powerful thing. Unfortunately when we start to live in “the real world,” many of us start to see pursuing imagination as childish. In her book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns), even screenwriter and actress Mindy Kaling admits to using revenge fantasies to get through her workouts. But the power of imagination doesn’t have to remain restricted to gym time. Many tasks, such as cleaning the house or cooking dinner, can be boring and lonesome if you aren’t thinking about anything else. A better option is to use that alone time to dream up wild and fun fantasies, even if they’re totally different from the life you actually lead. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to interview celebrities on your own daytime talk show? Or to win a Nobel Prize for creating an invention that changed the world? If not, it’s about time you did! You can dream up the dress you’d wear on the red carpet of the Academy Awards, or consider what it would be like to be a duchess in the 17th century. Whatever gets you excited is worth exploring.

Do things on your own

“Me time” is a gift, and many people in couples find they don’t get enough of it. So celebrate your singlehood by doing things with yourself! Treat yourself to a nice dinner out, or catch a movie you’ve been dying to see that no one else seems interested in. Or if you’re looking to save some money, take a relaxing bath with a good book, or go for a walk while listening to your favourite tunes. Take time to celebrate just being you!
